  2. English writer. In 1704 he celebrated
  3. Marlborough's victory at Blenheim in a poem,
  4. `The Campaign', and subsequently held
  5. political appointments, including
  6. under-secretary of state and secretary to the
  7. Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland 1708. In 1709 he
  8. contributed to the Tatler, begun by Richard
  9. Steele, with whom he was co- founder in 1711
  10. of the Spectator.
